Bolt is a video game based on a movie that is based on a TV show within the movie. The protagonist Bolt is a dog that stars in a TV show “in the movie” and the game as well. The game follows the movie in no way, because in the movie Bolt thinks what happens in the TV show is real, but in the game he can use his powers. I’ve never seen the movie so I have no idea what it is really about.

Throughout the game you can play as either Bolt or Penny and the game switches from one to the other as you progress.

Playing as Bolt you get to use his superpowers, like sonic bark, laser vision and more. As you use your powers, the power meter drops. You replenish your power with each villain you knock out. You also have normal attacks where Bolt jumps from villain to villain hitting them with his body. Playing as Bolt is boring and slow. Most enemies are easy to defeat, but there are so many of them you get tired of fighting them after a while. Even boss enemies are pretty easy to beat, but I can excuse that because it’s a kid’s game.

Playing as Penny is a bit different. It relies more on plat forming and stealth than fighting. Penny’s main weapon is the wheel bar. She uses it to attach to pipes and crossbars throughout the game to move from building to building and floor to floor. She also uses it to attack enemies in the game as she swings in like a bat to hit enemies. Her stealth ability is pretty much useless. You can slowly sneak up to an enemy and hit them before they see you, but letting an enemy see you actually saves time. Just wait for the enemy to run up to you then whack them. Once an enemy runs up to you a random button comes on the screen, just hit the button that corresponds to a button on the controller. Seriously, that’s it. One hit and it’s over.

There are also mini-games within the game whenever Penny hacks into a computer main frame. You try to shoot down bad computer programs as they try to hit you. The controls for this are awful. You use one analog stick to drive and one stick to shoot, but it does not work well. In fact it hardly works at all. This is by far the most frustrating part of the game.

The game also has a lot of quick time events that require you to hit a sequence of buttons as they appear on the screen. This is done to do some impressive building jumps and stunts with the wheel bar.

The graphics are pretty good, but the game itself feels very rushed. The camera sometimes jumps around making it hard to jump from platform to platform. Had more time been taken with this game, rather than rushing it to be released with the movie, it may have been a good game. There are parts of this game that come close to being good; however, it falls short. 5 out of 10.

Where do you get your pictures? I looked all over and the pictures with Penny I found were all water marked.
