MLB 2K9

Back in the days I used to eat, sleep and live baseball. Nowadays, the fan in me has degraded to curiousness for the American Past-time, a far stretch to the diehard that I used to be. Although, when surfing channels on the ole’ boob-tube, and I come across a baseball game, I refrain from switching channels and succumb to my curiosity to see who is pitching, who is hitting, what the score is, to the point where I might catch a few innings. Naturally, when I seen MLB 2K9 out for the Xbox 360 my curiosity peaked and little did I know that I should have switched the channel on this one.
First of all, the issue that disrupts this title from going anywhere is the fact that 2K Sports does not have any competition. Like EA with the NFL, 2K Sports have the rights to the baseball teams of the major leagues for the Xbox 360 titles and that opens the door for them to make a game that is subpar. All baseball fans with 360s are going to buy it because the 360 lacks another baseball game (until 2K sports The Bigs 2 this summer) and most likely they are going to be somewhat disappointed with it.
I do not want to totally beat on this game, MLB 2K9 did do some things right. The presentation is pretty good; although it still hiccups here and there (I will get to that). The nuances of individual player’s preparation swings and stepping out of the batter’s box to adjust their gloves or stall the pitcher is a nice touch, however it slows the pace of an already slow paced game. Also, I really like how they got the crowd involved with how they stand up to attempt to catch a foul ball, this detail adds to the realism of the game (it would have been nice to see one bounce of head every now and again). Plus, the commentary is excellent and easily my favorite part of the presentation. Yet, with the good there is the bad.
In this current generation market, popping this game in and seeing how it looks for the first time gives you the impression that it was suppose to be for the old Xbox. The game is certainly lacking in the department of polish, the graphics have a dated look to them when it comes to the player models. Sure, they have collective dirt on their uniforms but when you catch sight of the soulless faces it seems as if zombies are playing the game.
MLB 2K9 lacks a fantasy draft but it does have a “Living Rosters” element that is incorporated into the franchise mode and other selections of the game. Every trade that happens in real life baseball is mirrored in the game (must be online); this sort of thing should be incorporated in all sports franchises. And of course the game provides a homerun derby element that is pretty well done.
I have been playing sports games for awhile and I figured I would start at just the “pro” level of difficulty, I was wrong. After my sixth straight loss I figured I would drop the difficulty to rookie, yet that was not the problem. Five more games later and still losing, horribly, I pondered what could be the issue and came to a conclusion. No matter how much I would like the Pirates to be good, there is no way that is ever going to happen. I quickly succumb to the ways, dropped my head and begrudgingly chose the Yankees to try and save some faith, to no avail.
My abilities were obviously insufficient in the fielding and the pitching aspect of the game. The pitching was interesting with a two step swing mechanic using the right-toggle of the controller (you could switch this mechanic to a button if preferred). This was one of my favorite elements and yet I still had trouble striking batters out. When it came to the fielding, my infield play was superb in pulling off double plays and bunt retrieval but when it came to the plays in outfield and line drives my crew never seemed ready.
I would have to pinpoint some of these issues with the poor A.I., in the line drives the players would just stall as if they were terrified to move. Also, outfielders’ picking up the ball is a joke, this game is about quick thinking and fast reactions to get runners out and not acting like your tying your shoe before you pick up the ball (all the while scores are being made by the other team).
On the opposite spectrum, the hitting in the game is really nice and fluid. Swinging with the right analog feels natural and being able to increase your chances of directing the ball is encouraging (done with the left analog). The batting was fun; I just have to work on my patience because swinging at every pitch will cause you to get out quicker.
A lot of the presentation is good and the pitching and hitting was fun, but having a sports title requires the A.I. to be great in order for the game to be great. Otherwise, the game is mediocre with some interesting aspects. If MLB 2K9 had some competition than they probably would have focused on the more important aspects of a sports title than trying to just pitch another game to the market. MLB 2K9 gets a 6 out of 10.
