Recently I've heard that Google's Chrome Books are selling well.  From what I gather, this is just a cheap laptop that gives you a web browser to various Google functions as well as standard web access.

I can think of some scenarios where this might be useful, say... If Grandma wants to check her email and browse the web but you don't want her installing a virus.

But...  Like...  What's the draw for the average person?  Couldn't you just take a shitty-old laptop and get a copy of Chrome on it and do the same thing?  What am I missing here that makes this even remotely worthwhile?

My step-dad bought one because it was the cheapest laptop he could find that was still new and was from a brand he trusted. Simple as that.

$250 is hard to beat with all his criteria. At least that's how much he paid for it.

He knew we could upgrade RAM and Storage if necessary and didn't care for gaming.

Storage?  Does it even have storage?  I'm not sure you need RAM or Storage.  It's all web based and cloud based.

Well, yeah.

That was the point. He just wanted something that could get on the internet and he could use for work, but he also wanted to ability to upgrade it later so that if he wanted to, he could do other things.

Particularly, watch movies in HD. He might need more Storage for that.

And the one he bought has storage. I believe it had ~180-250 GB's.

This one is similar to what he bought.

Except that his had an HDD and not an SSD in it.

We never used the cloud or anything like that. The newer ones are geared more towards that (the one I linked has 16 GB of flash storage, not much for anything really.

His is one of the older ones.

I've thought about the same thing. You can get a laptop for $300 with Windows. I don't really know why anyone would want such a limited device.

I guess it's good for someone who only wants to surf the web and that's it.

It's about as useful as a tablet computer, but with a keyboard.  Oh, and it's a couple hundred bucks cheaper than an iPad.  I think it's pretty obvious why the chromebook is doing well.

If they could run Android apps, I'd probably buy one.

Kind of on the flipside of what you're saying I wonder if there's a build of chrome OS for tablets.

I know ubuntu has a new OS for nexus devices and firefox I believe is also building one.

I was just about to say Google could get into the market of building phone operating systems then quickly realized the massive hole in my thinking process.

Yeah.  This further illustrates the need for Google to merge their Chrome and Android platforms.

I suppose since chrome OS is more or less just chrome they already have.

Chrome on android is a phenomenal browser.

I'm not sure what the app support is like on the android version but they could probably expand upon it a bit more and catch up to chrome os.

Cancer Update for 05/20/2013

On Friday when I wrote the last update, she was very much out of it and I didn't think she'd make it to Saturday.  However, by Saturday morning she was a bit more alert.  She knew who I was and responded when I said, "Good Morning" by repeating that and saying, "Kevin" as well.  So that is a good sign in terms of where she should be mentally and where she actually is.Things are confusing because she has "any minute death" symptoms like muscle wasting (Her arms and legs are loose skin and…See More

Cancer Update for 05/18/2013

We're at the end of the line.  She's not expected to make it past the weekend at this rate.  Her decline from semi-alert but confused, to completely out of it was rapid.   She can still eat and drink but no longer has any conversation and does not really know much else about what is happening. Though she is generally comfortable when on medication and continues to breath normally.  At this point, I'm waiting for "labored breathing" which is apparently what is the last stage of this.  When…See More

Raspberry Pi

I bought a Raspberry Pi today.  Primarily to use it as the mining computer for my ASIC rigs.  I had a temptation to get a netbook and use that, since the interface would be more open ended running Windows and everything.  But the Raspberry Pi is "neat" and it only runs on 1.5watts to 3watts.  Which is ridiculous.  In order to get maximum ROI the wattage needs to be low.  Hopefully doesn't turn into a nightmare to get up and working.  Though there are many straight forward examples.  I'm not new…See More

Cancer Update for 05/08/2013

So, after coming home from work on Tuesday, Mom was laying flat resting and they had installed the catheter.  While this relieved a lot of the stomach pain she was having (Most pain, unless she moved around and then got shots of back pain.) she appeared very much lethargic and tired.Since then, she's been unable to eat and drink on her own.  I have to give her one pill at a time, and feed her, but she doesn't eat much.  I believe this is because she has to concentrate to swallow, and that is…See More

How’s the computer programming field coming along?

A blog post I just read, published back in 2007, about the field of computer programming expressed several traits of irritation that I had previously heard Kevin voice on the podcast. Some of the members on this forum are in the programming field, I think; is the typical job as arduous and unromantic as this blogger depicted the profession six years ago? He describes the knowledge decay unique to this field, along with its low degree of prestige and high susceptibility to “foreignization”. The…See More
