So one of the Loading Bar email shows for December was the 10th highest rated item on Spill's website for the year 2012. We're seeing an exponential rate of growth in terms of overall views and the numbers continue to impress.
This year, the Spill convention is merging with the Rooster Teeth convention, so we expect a large presence to gain considerable new audience from that.
Right now, the owners are concentrating on trying to make the website pay for itself. So even though this is all good news, they are actually cutting expenses, which doesn't impact me or anyone on TLB. Probably has more to do with Korey and some of the movie review guys who expense trips and such. We're the least expensive property they have, since we don't even attend trade conferences.
They did hire a web developer team to begin enhancing and correcting issues with the site. I'm not sure what the results of this are, but we should see new features and things take root as time goes on. I am hopeful they will fix the RSS feed issues one of these days.
I think 2013 will be mostly the same, without too many content changes. Korey wants us to do the email show weekly instead of bi-weekly, but that would be about it.
If the audience share continues to grow though, I can see more money being thrown at the project. Not talking about quitting my day job before I retire. But we could see Spill start to become a respected property moving forward. Let's hope so. I put a lot of fucking work into it.

I know Midwest Wasteland and the "regular show" could be a problem since you depend on other hosts (Jedi, Brian, Larry...) but an Oblast or two a month would be very nice. Maybe do a tech/game news show once a week with Jeff? He seems serious enough for that kind of show to work... You could poste those on VNG since spill doesn't do the news.
Also, i'm sorry you had to live through the "family member with cancer" situation. Slow deaths are the worse, for the person dying and for people around him/her.
Permalink Reply by nutman on February 27, 2013 at 3:55am Exciting. TLB is good, though I think you really need a show where you talk more. I guess the call-in show kind of does that, but I miss the style of VGN
Permalink Reply by Kevin J Baird on February 27, 2013 at 10:48am My schedule in the coming months will be quite erratic. I am moving in with my Mom on Saturday. So long as she is not bed ridden and lucid there won't be time to record anything other than my Spill shows. However, once she becomes less lucid, there won't be much for me to do at her house. I am thinking I'll be putting together a number of Oblasts during this time, and potentially some VGNR shows as well, other hosts schedules permitting. Because the situation is completely variable in its outcome, I don't know exactly when this will be. However, I should actually have more free time than I normally do, simply because of the way my work schedule will be going forward. So expect a lot more shows in the coming months.
I wouldn't mind bringing my shows over to Spill and making them Spill properties. However, Spill is an entertainment first site. And Korey is VERY particular about the content of the shows. For instance, Jeff wanted to do a show called "The Re-Education of Nick Hodges" where Nick would play really old games we assigned him, and capture it on video as he added commentary. Korey shot this down because he felt other hosts would need to participate.
Even minor things, (That I consider minor) like which entry for the Loading Bar logo contest would be displayed on the carousel was wrought with controversy to the point that Jeff was ripping his hair out and saying he was going to quit. Korey didn't like the size of the font over the other art details. So it just got heated and escalated.
So can you imagine trying to do VGNR with all of our anarchy? It wouldn't fly.
Now, that said, there is a plan to move TLB to its own sister-site, where it will need additional content. We may see a call to enlarge our footprint at that point and add shows. I will suggest a technical show, where we discuss hardware and the like. I don't think any of the other hosts are even remotely technically inclined though. They are all artists. Jeff/Korey are animators. Nick is in film school. And Jason makes independent films. I'm the only one on the team that has a technical background and outside of Korey a business background.
So I would probably need other hosts to participate. And that involves spending more money. Which right now they are not going to do.
In the short term, I'll continue making my shows independently. In 2013 I think it will be mostly the same as last year with Spill. But there are things in motion that 2014 and beyond could be interesting and bring about more shows and changes.
I look forward to being a part of it, and will do my best to make it a success. I appreciate everyone's support and hanging in there waiting around for shows. I am thinking about putting out content all the time, and have a lot of things burning in the back of my brain. Things are just very stressful and complicated right now, but I do hope to find the time in the coming months.
On a side note, Larry is assisting in watching my Mom while I'm at work. And Brian is watching her on Fridays. This is the most interaction all of us have had in years. So expect a lot of stories.
Thanks!
Kevin
