I figured I would continue to update this blog so that people can understand some of the difficulties faced when a parent passes and you are stuck dealing with the Estate. And I'll update on Mom's status as things progress.
So, we went to her house and cleaned out her refrigerator of anything spoiled. We anticipate that she is still going to be coming home for awhile. We're not sure when or how long, but we're leaving everything in the house, for the most part. I took the important documents (Will, Medical Power of Attorney, Trust) and her Jewelry. In the event the house gets broken into, it was better that I gathered up the most important pieces.
The next step is paying her bills. She made me a signer on her Checking account when she was first diagnosed with cancer. This was a good idea, unfortunately I don't have an ATM card or access to her online banking (The passwords I tried failed) so I will have to go down to the bank so I can get a bank balance and then start cutting checks.
She has one check due to the hospital for nearly $15,000. That should be the out-of-pocket maximum. Not sure how that works though. Have to do some calling around.
I also have to get the dog to the Vet. I have no idea when I'll be doing that.
So tomorrow, I'll be getting up, going to the bank, then locating my Mom's check book at her house (Or vice versa) and getting her mail. Then going downtown to visit with her. I'll then get back home and we'll record the new VGNR.
