So the Parma Hospital won't take her.  We're looking at the Old Folks Home now.  Waiting to find out if her insurance will allow her to go there.  Either way, we're going to get her on Monday or Tuesday and bring her home.  This moving to rehab thing is mostly just an exercise to put her somewhere while we wait for her sisters to arrive and take her.

Some talk about getting Hospice, Wheelchair, Bedpans, Hospital Bed for her at home.  As it is, right now, I'm not the Medical Power of Attorney.  So I can't do any of that.  We're going to need to figure it out when they get here.

Mom is still able to text me on the phone and seems mostly lucid.  Though she forgets things and misunderstands things.  For instance, I've told her the situation with her back-door multiple times.  That the door frame is busted and the repairman is coming to fix the door frame.  And the cost is going to be around $700.

This morning, she wrote me and told me that she has another door in the rafters of the garage and that she thinks we could use that door instead of buying a new door.

So once again, I tell her that the door is fine.  It's the door frame.

I suspect this will only get worse.  It's probably like Alzheimer's.  They both impact the brain in a similar fashion.  Although in my Mom's case, it seems more confusion than forgetfulness.  It's strange.

Ex-Sister in Law and Brian's first two daughters are going to visit with her tonight.

I have the Notary paper all done, but forgot to bring the insurance papers to work.  So that will be tomorrow's exercise.  I may have to take some time off of work if I find myself on hold too long.  Some of this is going to require a lot of time on the phone I think.  But I have the ability to fax things here, so may be easier to get it done.

Right now, the main problem is a $15,000 hospital bill that I believe should have at least partially been covered by her "Out of Pocket Maximum" which is the limit on the amount of money you pay yourself before insurance covers the rest.

I also need to call her bank and get her online banking password reset.

Both require the Notary.

Meanwhile, I have paid her current bills that I've received in the mail.  For the time being she has enough cash in her checking account to deal with anything that comes in, minus the gigantic hospital bill.  I need to get access to her accounts to figure out how her checking gets populated with funds.  Either Medicare check and 401k distribution lands there, or it lands in a different account.

My Mom's banking situation is COMPLEX to say the least.  For instance, she has a bank account devoted purely to taxes.  Things like that are going to drive me bonkers as I try to put the pieces together on what is what.

Today she asked me to bring her nail clippers and underwear as well.  I have to meet the door repairman tomorrow night, so will pick up this junk then.  I also need to get her snow tires on her car so her sisters have something to drive when they are here.  Then I have to exchange cars in her driveway again so I can pick them up on Monday night and everything is kosher.

Plus transport the dogs and dog stuff back to her house.

Ugh...  Busy.

Cancer Update for 05/18/2013

We're at the end of the line.  She's not expected to make it past the weekend at this rate.  Her decline from semi-alert but confused, to completely out of it was rapid.   She can still eat and drink but no longer has any conversation and does not really know much else about what is happening. Though she is generally comfortable when on medication and continues to breath normally.  At this point, I'm waiting for "labored breathing" which is apparently what is the last stage of this.  When…See More

Raspberry Pi

I bought a Raspberry Pi today.  Primarily to use it as the mining computer for my ASIC rigs.  I had a temptation to get a netbook and use that, since the interface would be more open ended running Windows and everything.  But the Raspberry Pi is "neat" and it only runs on 1.5watts to 3watts.  Which is ridiculous.  In order to get maximum ROI the wattage needs to be low.  Hopefully doesn't turn into a nightmare to get up and working.  Though there are many straight forward examples.  I'm not new…See More

Cancer Update for 05/08/2013

So, after coming home from work on Tuesday, Mom was laying flat resting and they had installed the catheter.  While this relieved a lot of the stomach pain she was having (Most pain, unless she moved around and then got shots of back pain.) she appeared very much lethargic and tired.Since then, she's been unable to eat and drink on her own.  I have to give her one pill at a time, and feed her, but she doesn't eat much.  I believe this is because she has to concentrate to swallow, and that is…See More

How’s the computer programming field coming along?

A blog post I just read, published back in 2007, about the field of computer programming expressed several traits of irritation that I had previously heard Kevin voice on the podcast. Some of the members on this forum are in the programming field, I think; is the typical job as arduous and unromantic as this blogger depicted the profession six years ago? He describes the knowledge decay unique to this field, along with its low degree of prestige and high susceptibility to “foreignization”. The…See More

Cancer Update 05/06/2013

Well, this weekend I changed my first diaper.  Except instead of a little baby, I have a 150 pound woman who is in pain as I try to move her around.  She didn't eat almost anything the last twenty four hours.  She complains of stomach pain, however I'm almost certain this is because she is not going pee.  I don't know why she is resistant to peeing in the diaper, as I've told her time and again that she should pee in the diaper.  She wants to get up and sit on the poo poo pot.  Brian, on…See More

Cancer Update 05/02/2012

Brian is only here for one day, which is Friday.  He is not good in situations like this, but he does the best he can.  Though he practically ran out of here last Saturday, left his food behind.  It's difficult to deal with when someone is in a lot of pain and requires a lot of care.I try to stay focused on one day at a time.  I've basically been imprisoned in my Mom's house now for about two months.  I figure she has less than a month left.  That is very difficult to say, but her mental…See More
